Discovery Point Announces Gabriela Martinez as Recipient of the Terri Lynne Lokoff National Child Care Teacher Award!

March 16th, 2012

February 21, 2012 – Duluth, GA. In the Discovery Point tradition of leadership in the child care industry, Gabriela Martinez has been awarded the Terri Lynne Lokoff National Child Care Teacher Award. Martinez teaches at the Discovery Point Child Development Center in Suwanee, Georgia, and was nominated in the fall by the center’s management team, her peers, and parents of her students. As part of the application process, Martinez presented her vision of a Multi-Cultural Literacy Center being added to her classroom.

Martinez is striving to overcome language barriers to create a learning environment in which all children will thrive. The award-winning proposal is for developing a multilingual literacy center that incorporates five of the languages spoken by students in her preschool classroom. The literacy center includes a study center with storage for books, various books on CD as well as a CD player, flashcards, notebooks and writing utensils. A section of the learning center is dedicated to listening and reading activities, with a complimentary area focused on developing writing skills. The literacy center is stocked with age-appropriate materials for the children’s use.

An awards ceremony for all award winners will take place this spring in Pennsylvania. This event celebrates the best and most dedicated early childhood development teachers in the country. “This is an opportunity for great teachers to receive recognition for outstanding work in early childhood development. We are very proud to have Gabriela as one of the recipients” exclaimed Hows King, owner of the Discovery Point Suwanee Center.

November 16, 2011 – Duluth, GA.  Cindy Siegel joins the Discovery Point Franchising Inc. management team as Director of Operations. Siegel brings nearly a decade of management and development experience in the childcare industry to her new position at Discovery Point. Prior to working in the childcare industry, Siegel spent her early career in operations for several major retailers, including The Disney Stores. Siegel gained experience in the childcare industry while working for Learning Care Group Inc., where she began as a district manager, and was eventually promoted to Divisional Vice President, overseeing over 100 locations across the Southeast.  At Discovery Point, Siegel will be responsible for overseeing new program development for Discovery Point, curriculum and accreditation evaluations, and franchise-wide operations.

DP62 Lexington Oaks receives glowing praise from a parent!

November 11th, 2011

It takes a very special person to be able to care for children as they would their own. According to the mother of a DP62 Lexington Oaks student, there are multiple teachers and staff who fit the “special person” qualification at this Center.

I am writing to let you know what a wonderful Center Discovery Point 62 in Lexington Oaks is. My son is 3 and half years old and has been in Discovery Point since early this year. Recently we decided to move him to a school that was closer to our home, and promised us the same type of curriculum, care and love he was getting at Discovery Point. We were very sad to leave Discovery Point. All the staff were so supportive of us and told us that we should let them know if we ever needed anything in the future. What they didn’t know is, that time would come only 2 weeks later!

We had a very bad experience with the new center we put our son in. I ended up calling Discovery Point in tears after picking him up and asking them if they still had a place for him. Ms. Shannon was absolutely wonderful on the phone with me. She listened to me, talked to me and made me feel better in minutes!

DP62 owners Sarah and Jane are absolutely great! They always greet us with a smile and their door is always open for us to come in and discuss any concerns we have. I have also had phone conversations as well as email exchanges with both of them and I could not feel more comfortable with leaving my son in the care of Discovery Point! Sarah and Jane make themselves available to parents at all times which is so nice of them!

My son has 2 different speech disorders, as well as an immune system deficiency and severe food allergies. They are always following up with us asking how he is doing with his speech therapy and his health. They have informed all of the kitchen staff about his food allergies. His teachers are also aware or his food allergies and they never want to leave him out. On special occasions when there is a special treat provided, someone always calls me to check to see if this is something that my son can have. I truly appreciate the staff always trying their best to include him in the treats! It makes him feel really good too!

His 2-year-old class teachers Ms. Barbara and Ms. Sue were absolutely wonderful with him. Ms. Barbara always assured me that he was just like any other 2 year old in the class, with the exception of not talking as much due to his speech disorders. She always took time to talk to me about any concerns I had. I even had some concerns about how he was interacting with the other children. Ms. Barbara put my mind at ease by telling me he was playing appropriately with all of the children; he did not go off and play by himself. But as a concerned mom, I had to see for myself. So one day after I left the class, they went outside to play and I asked the front desk staff if I could possibly watch my son interact with the other children outside. I was made to feel totally comfortable in one of the classrooms, where I could see outside. The interaction that Ms. Barbara had with the kids was wonderful! She had them all running races and kicking a ball, and they were all laughing and having a great time. Ms. Sue was also catching the kids as they went down the slide and chasing them around (as well as making sure they all stayed hydrated!) So I was able to see for myself that my son interacted with the kids and the teachers very nicely!

Ms. Sue made my son feel so comfortable with his speech. She would have little one on one talking sessions with him, and he would listen so careful to everything she was saying. Ms. Sue was also great at potty training! I don’t think I could have done it without her!

When my son graduated to the 3 year old class, we were thrilled to see him move up, but also sad to see him leave the wonderful setting and teachers in the 2 year old class. But we had very nice teachers to move up to. My son loves Ms. Candice and Ms. Alicia. He truly looks forward to each day in their class! When I pick him up in the afternoon, he tells me all about his day with his teachers. To him, the teachers are not there to “work”; they are there to play with him! I feel that the teachers in this Center are not here for a job but because they truly love the children and they treat each one as if they are their own.

Ms. Helen and Ms. Shannon are so wonderful at the front desk! They always have a smile for us when we arrive in the morning as well as when I pick him up in the afternoon. They always acknowledge my son when we arrive and leave as well. They are very pleasant when I call to check on him, and they answer any questions I may have.

They also go above and beyond each day. If there is something special happening and my son wasn’t in school, they will always call me to let me know what is happening. For example in the summer time, if he didn’t attend on Thursday they would call me Thursday night to let me know water play was the next day and I should bring his bathing suit. They always want the children to feel as included as they can! This is so nice of them!

One other example of the DP62 staff going above and beyond, everyday:

Last week my son misplaced his jacket. It was a little chilly out when I picked him up, so each teacher looked for his jacket in their class. I told the teachers that it wasn’t a big deal, these things happen, and to just call me if the jacket was found. Ms. Candice did not give up on the search! She was determined and she found it! She gave it to my son, who gave her a thumbs up. She informed us he put it in another cubby that looked like his old one! We thanked her and got in the car. My son said to me “I wov (love) Ms. Candice for finding my red jacket!”

My son asks each night before bed, “Am I going to the hand print school tomorrow?” He loves Discovery Point! When I tell him I have to bring him to speech school, he says , “Ok, but can I go to the handprint school the next time?” I could go on and on about this school!!

It is so nice to go to work and not have to worry about my son’s health, safety or happiness! I feel very fortunate that Discovery Point takes his food allergies so serious (as this is one of the things that did not happen at the school we changed him to and could have been a terrible outcome)

I want to give my sincere thanks to all of the staff at Discovery Point Lexington Oaks, the owners, Sarah and Jane, the directors, Helen and Shannon all of the teachers, assistant teachers, helpers and kitchen staff! They all do a wonderful job each and every day!

My son is my 3rd child, so I am not at all new to daycare centers. However, this is the best center that any of my children have ever attended!!!

A bittersweet departure

January 31st, 2011

This heart-felt letter is from a parent at DP41:

Dear Discovery Point Staff,

Sadly, our time at Discovery Point is coming to an end. Eli & Reagan's last day will be January 6, 2011. Our departure is bittersweet. We are excited to begin our new adventure, yet will miss all our friends at DP.

Choosing a preschool rivals choosing a college. The selection process can be quite daunting. How fortunate were we to find our number one choice right in our own backyard? Yours is a premier school.

The peace of mind you afford to parents is priceless. Your students aren't just names on a roster, but rather part of the Discovery Point family. From the owners to the support staff, all are hands-on. Thanks for making Eli & Reagan feel so welcomed.

Discovery Point Ranked on Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises List

January 18th, 2011

December 20, 2010. Discovery Point has been ranked on Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchises List for 2011. Discovery Point makes their debut on the list at #290, a respectable entrance onto a list that also features more widely recognized franchises like McDonalds, Subway and Hampton Hotels.

Entrepreneur Magazine has generated its list of the Top 500 franchises for over 30 years. To begin generating the list, Entrepreneur asks franchisors to participate in a survey that helps scale the list of eligible companies down to 760. Based on financial and statistical data over the past two years, the list of top 500 companies is finalized.

The criteria to qualify for the list is what separates the extraordinary from the ordinary: financial strength and stability, growth rate, and size of the system are evaluated. These criteria apply to all the companies that are considered, no matter their size. Other factors are used to determine the list, such as the years of operation, how long they have been franchising, and whether the company provides financing.

Founder and president, Cliff Clark was immensely pleased to have Discovery Point enter the list, saying that “this recognition shows that Discovery Point is more than a child development center you see on your way home from work. We are a solid franchising company who is recognized as one of the best in the nation.”

DP45 lends a helping hand to local tornado victims

December 17th, 2010

When a recent tornado struck the Kirkland neighborhood and surrounding area, DP45 owners Art and Sue Swengel decided to reach out to those affected. One of the Center's students lost their home to the tornado, and many other students' homes were severely damaged, as well. 56 homes in the Kirkland neighborhood were damaged, with many completely destroyed.

The Swengels appealed to the community around them and started a collection of items for the families affected. Working off of lists provided by the Salvation Army and Red Cross, DP45 collected the following items:

  • Household items
  • Clothing
  • Garbage bags
  • Bottled water
  • Christmas toys
  • Blankets and linens

When the donation drive completes, DP45 will be presenting  all the items collected to the Kirkland Home Owners Association. Sue has said she has seen a tremendous outpouring of support and donations from the community, especially families of her Center's students when they found out that some of their children's classmates had either lost their home or had their home damaged by the tornado.

From DPFI, we applaud DP45's community outreach in helping these families that would have had an otherwise abysmal holiday season. For information on how you can help, please contact Art or Sue Swengel at 770-513-0231, or email them at discoverypoint45@yahoo.com
